Vice President Harris Calls on Congress to Enshrine Abortion Rights into Law, Despite GOP Attacks on Her Ability to Serve as Commander in Chief and Biden’s Age

Vice President Kamala Harris has called on Congress to enshrine abortion rights into law after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. In an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Harris pushed back against Republican claims that Democrats support abortions up until birth, but declined to say how far into a pregnancy abortion access should be denied.

The Vice President also responded to GOP attacks on her ability to serve as commander in chief if needed and President Joe Biden’s age in the early race for the White House. Republican presidential candidates, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, have raised concerns about Biden’s age.

However, Democrats need 60 votes in the Senate to avoid a filibuster as well as a majority in the House, making it unlikely that legislation to codify Roe into law will pass. Since the Supreme Court ruling, a number of states have rolled back abortion rights.

Vice President Harris has urged Congress to take action to protect abortion rights, but it remains to be seen if the legislation will be able to pass in the current political climate. In the meantime, Harris has continued to push back against Republican attacks on her ability to serve as commander in chief if needed and President Biden’s age.
