Former White House adviser Peter Navarro was found guilty Thursday of criminal contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a congressional subpoena related to the plot to overturn the 2020 election.
Navarro, 74, was convicted on two counts of contempt for refusing to testify before the House Jan. 6 committee and turn over subpoenaed documents. He faces a maximum of one year in prison and a fine of $100,000 for each count.
The jury deliberated for about four hours before finding Navarro guilty. Prosecutors alleged Navarro “acted like he was above the law” when he defied the request from the now-expired House select committee for documents and testimony in February 2022.
Sentencing is set for January. During closing arguments Thursday morning, prosecutor John Crabb told jurors in the Washington, D.C. federal courtroom, “There’s no mistake, no accident.”
Navarro was a top White House trade adviser under former President Donald Trump. At the time, congressional investigators were interested in Navarro’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
