Former NFL player Carl Nassib has announced his retirement from professional football after two years of making history as the first active NFL player to publicly identify as gay.

Nassib, 30, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post Wednesday, saying he was ready to move on to the next chapter.

“It was always my dream to play in the NFL, even as a walk-on, and I really feel like the luckiest guy on the planet,” Nassib said. “I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had.”

The defensive lineman said he was feeling physically and mentally fit, but chose to retire to focus on other aspects of his life.

“I’ve played a lot of games, played a lot of football, and I’m ready to move on to the next chapter,” Nassib said.

Throughout his career, Nassib has played for the Cleveland Browns, the Las Vegas Raiders, and was a captain of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nassib said he is grateful for the opportunity to play in the NFL and is looking forward to the next stage of his life.
