Tennessee state Rep. Gloria Johnson has announced her candidacy for U.S. Senate against incumbent Republican Marsha Blackburn. Johnson made the announcement on Tuesday near Knoxville’s Central High School, where she was a special education teacher and a survivor of a 2008 shooting that left one student dead.
In a press release announcing her Senate bid, Johnson said she is “tired of Tennessee families being betrayed by those that represent them, over and over and over.” She added that she is challenging Blackburn “because Tennessee deserves a Senator who will fight for working families not special interest donors and D.C. politicians.”
Blackburn’s campaign responded by calling Johnson a “radical socialist” and tying her to the GOP’s favorite boogeywomen – members of “the Squad.” Johnson is a gun safety advocate who rose to prominence as one of the so-called “Tennessee Three.”
The Tennessee state legislature recently held a special session to address gun control, but ended without any resolutions. Johnson said she is running for Senate to ensure that Tennesseans have a voice in the national conversation on gun control.
The election will be held in November 2020. If elected, Johnson would be the first female Senator elected by Tennessee voters.
