“Steve Harwell, Lead Singer of Smash Mouth, Passes Away at 53

Legendary singer Steve Harwell, former lead singer of the band Smash Mouth, has died at the age of 53. Harwell had been in hospice care and passed away peacefully at his home in Boise, Idaho, surrounded by family and friends.

Robert Hayes, the band’s manager, confirmed the news to Rolling Stone on Monday. Harwell had been battling medical issues for several years.

Smash Mouth is best known for their 1999 hit “All Star” and has sold over 10 million albums worldwide. The band scored two No. 1 hit singles, five Top 40 singles and a Grammy nomination.

Harwell retired from the band in 2021. In a statement, he said, “To my bandmates, it’s been an honour performing with you all these years and I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

Hayes said of Harwell, “Steve’s iconic voice is one of the most recognizable voices from his generation.” He added, “He was surrounded by family and friends and passed peacefully and comfortably.”

Harwell’s death has been met with an outpouring of love and support from fans and fellow musicians. He will be remembered for his incredible talent and the legacy he left behind.
