A trial date has been set for the election subversion case brought against former President Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants in Georgia. On Thursday, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee set the trial date for October 23, 2023, in response to a request from Kenneth Chesebro, one of the defendants charged with attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

Chesebro had invoked Georgia’s speedy trial law to rush his case to trial in November 2023, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis responded by requesting a trial start date in October. In her request to the court Thursday, Willis noted that Chesebro had submitted a “demand for speedy trial” under a Georgia statute Wednesday.

Willis had previously proposed that the trial start on March 4, the same week that voters in 16 states go to the polls in the presidential primaries. However, Chesebro’s request for an early trial was granted, and the trial will now begin on October 23. Judge McAfee specified that the schedule applied to no other defendant in the case.

The election subversion case is the first of its kind in the United States, and the trial is expected to attract significant attention. It is unclear how the trial will affect the upcoming presidential primaries, but the trial date has been set and the case is now moving forward.
