Key takeaways:

  • John Lauro, Trump’s criminal defense attorney, argued that if Trump had committed a “technical violation of the Constitution,” it does not necessarily mean he broke any criminal laws.
  • Former Attorney General William Barr said he would testify in the Jan. 6 criminal trial against Trump if called, and that he believed the case against the former president was legitimate.
  • Lauro claimed that Trump and Pence had merely disagreed over whether a vice president could constitutionally take actions.

Former President Donald Trump’s criminal defense attorney, John Lauro, argued Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that if Trump had committed a “technical violation of the Constitution,” it does not necessarily mean he broke any criminal laws.

Former Attorney General William Barr, who served under Trump, said Sunday on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that he would testify in the Jan. 6 criminal trial against Trump if called, and that he believed the case against the former president was legitimate. Barr had made similar comments shortly after Trump was indicted on four criminal counts linked to his efforts to remain in power after he lost the 2020 presidential election to Joe Biden.

When asked by NBC’s Chuck Todd about Trump’s alleged pressure campaign to get former Vice President Mike Pence to reverse the election, Lauro claimed that Trump and Pence had merely disagreed over whether a vice president could constitutionally take actions.

Trump is facing a four-count criminal indictment stemming from the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot and his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The former president’s criminal defense team is now preparing to defend him in court. It remains to be seen if Barr will be called to testify in the trial and what his testimony will reveal.
