Former President Donald Trump is still leading in the polls for the Republican presidential race, despite facing growing legal pressure. Trump’s Save America PAC has spent more than $20 million on legal fees in the first six months of 2023, according to new campaign finance reports filed Monday with the Federal Election Commission.

The PAC has been covering Trump’s legal expenses and those of his associates who have been drawn into the multiple investigations probing Trump’s conduct in and out of office. Trump signaled Monday that he’s not inclined to attend the first Republican debate later this month, posting on social media, “Let them debate so I can see who I MIGHT consider for Vice President!”

This weekend, 13 Republican candidates descended on Iowa for the Lincoln Dinner in Des Moines. Despite the legal pressure, Trump continues to hold a commanding double-digit lead in national and statewide polls. On Friday night, he shared the stage in Iowa with opponents who hesitated to criticize him while they attempted to pitch themselves as an alternative.

The legal fees have taken a toll on Trump’s political operation, but it appears that it has not affected his standing among GOP primary voters. Trump’s legal woes may be costly, but they have not been enough to derail his lead in the polls.
