A new poll released Monday shows former President Donald Trump leading Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican primary race. Thomas Massie (R-KY), one of the few House Republicans to endorse DeSantis’s bid, joked that DeSantis should get indicted in order to boost his poll numbers among voters.
The New York Times/Siena College poll of 932 likely Republican primary voters reported a 37 percentage point lead for Trump over DeSantis in a one-on-one matchup. The poll was conducted July 23-27 and reported a margin of error of plus or minus 3.96 percentage points.
In an interview with The Miami Herald, Massie said, “I’ve said we gotta figure out, we got to find some judge in Florida that’ll indict DeSantis quick, to close this indictment gap.” Massie was referring to the mounting indictments former President Donald Trump is facing and the repeated claims he made suggesting his legal problems helps his poll numbers by riling up his base.
DeSantis has made “fighting wokeness” his signature issue, but according to the poll, Trump polls ahead of him even on that topic. “Not even close,” said Hasan, a political analyst. “Simply put, it’s done.”
