A Florida woman was sentenced to 51 months in prison Thursday for defrauding an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor of more than $2.8 million.
Peaches Stergo, 36, met the victim, who has not been publicly identified, on a dating website and asked for money that she said was to help get funds from a legal settlement, according to court documents.
“Peaches Stergo callously defrauded an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who was simply looking for companionship,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams.
Stergo pleaded guilty to wire fraud in April in connection with the years-long romantic scam. She told a series of lies, fabricating stories that she needed money to gain access to a TD Bank account or else she would never be able to access the funds.
“She used the millions of dollars in fraud proceeds to live a life of luxury at the victim’s expense,” Williams said.
