Key takeaways:

  • Anheuser-Busch announced 350 layoffs, mostly from corporate positions, in order to recover from a campaign involving a trans influencer.
  • The layoffs will not include frontline staff such as “brewery and warehouse staff, drivers, and field sales, among others.”
  • The layoffs come as Anheuser-Busch seeks to recover from the fallout of the campaign with Mulvaney.

Anheuser-Busch, the parent company of Bud Light, announced on Wednesday that it would be laying off 350 employees, mostly from corporate positions, in order to recover from the fallout of a campaign involving a trans influencer.

The layoffs will not include frontline staff such as “brewery and warehouse staff, drivers, and field sales, among others,” the company said in a statement. Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth said in a statement, “Today we took the very difficult but necessary decision to eliminate a number of positions across our corporate organization.”

The layoffs will affect less than 2% of Anheuser-Busch’s approximately 18,000 employees nationwide. The company designed a marketing campaign in April with social media star and trans rights activist Dylan Mulvaney, which led to calls from some conservatives for a boycott. As a result, Bud Light lost its longtime ranking in May as the nation’s best-selling beer, with rival Modelo Especial taking the lead.

Anheuser-Busch said in a statement, “While we never take these decisions lightly, we want to ensure that our organization continues to be set for future long-term success.” The company is eliminating close to 2% of workers “across every corporate function.”

The layoffs come as Anheuser-Busch seeks to recover from the fallout of the campaign with Mulvaney. It remains to be seen how the company will adjust to the changes and how the layoffs will affect its operations.
