Greek Island of Rhodes Experiences Devastating Wildfire, Evacuation of Four Locations Ordered

A large wildfire has been burning on the Greek island of Rhodes for the past five days, forcing authorities to order an evacuation of four locations, including two seaside resorts. The blaze had been confined to the island’s mountainous center, but was aided by winds, very high temperatures and dry conditions, allowing it to spread Saturday toward the coast on the island’s central-eastern side.

In response to the fire, the Greek Coastguard has lead more than 20 boats in an emergency evacuation to rescue people from the island. Fire Service spokesman Yannis Artopios said Saturday afternoon that the residents of four localities were sent SMS messages to evacuate — in two localities they were told to move to the northeast and, in two others, to the southwest.
