President Joe Biden has nominated Adm. Lisa Franchetti to lead the Navy, a historic choice that, if confirmed, will make her the first woman to be a Pentagon service chief and the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Adm. Franchetti is currently the vice chief of operations for the Navy and has extensive command and executive experience. In a statement Friday, Mr. Biden noted the historical significance of her selection and said “throughout her career, Admiral Franchetti has demonstrated extensive expertise in both the operational and policy arenas.”
The announcement of the four expected nominees comes as Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) continues to hold more than 250 military promotions in protest of the Defense Department’s abortion policy. In response, President Biden criticized the Alabama Republican, arguing that supporting servicemembers transcends politics.
“What Senator Tuberville is doing is not only wrong—it is dangerous,” Biden said in a statement. “In this moment of rapidly evolving security environments and intense competition, he is risking our ability to ensure that the United States Armed Forces remain the greatest fighting force in the history of the world.”
Adm. Franchetti is expected to meet with leadership at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the coming weeks. If confirmed, she will be the first woman to lead the Navy in its 244-year history.
