The wife of a New York architect charged with the killings of three women has filed for divorce, her lawyer said Wednesday.

Rex Heuermann, 59, was charged Friday with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello 27. The remains of the women were discovered in 2010 on a Long Island beach.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison told CBS New York in an interview that aired Monday that the women were shocked when they were informed of their husband’s arrest. He added that he did not believe they knew about the “double life” Heuermann was living.

The women were believed to be sex workers who advertised online, police have said. All four women worked as online sex workers before they went missing between 2007 and 2010, according to People.

Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, has filed for divorce, according to her lawyer Robert Macedonio. A summons and complaint had been filed on behalf of Ellerup in Suffolk County Supreme Court.

Ellerup is not considered a suspect in the killings, as she was out of state at the time. Heuermann is accused of murdering the three women and is currently being held without bail.
