Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Monday, becoming the third Republican to enter the race for the seat currently held by Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, LaRose expressed his concern for the direction of the country and his commitment to defending the values that made America the hope of the world.

“As the father of three young girls, I’m not willing to sit quietly while the woke left tries to cancel the American Dream,” LaRose said. “We have a duty to defend the values that made America the hope of the world. Someone needs to step up and take on the fight.”

LaRose, who is also Ohio’s chief elections officer, launched his campaign with a video in which he spoke of his belief that hard work and focus can make anything possible.

The Ohio Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country next year. Brown’s seat is seen as a prized pickup for the GOP, as former President Donald Trump won the state in both of his elections.

LaRose joins a crowded Republican primary field that includes former state treasurer Josh Mandel and Cleveland businessman Mike Gibbons. The winner of the Republican primary will face Brown in the general election in November 2024.
