A suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the unsolved murders of at least 10 women whose bodies were found on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach more than a decade ago, according to two government officials and a law enforcement official.
The possible breakthrough in the hunt for a suspect in what’s become known as “the Long Island serial killer” case came a little more than a year after police released audio of a 911 call made by Shannan Gilbert just before she vanished in 2010.
The suspect is from Massapequa, which is in neighboring Nassau County. There were no immediate details about where the suspect was taken into custody but there is a large police presence this morning in Massapequa Park, CBS New York reported.
The Suffolk County Police Department and Suffolk County District Attorney are leading the investigation. Eleven sets of remains have been found on a stretch of highway in Suffolk County after police began searching along Ocean Parkway for Shannan Gilbert, a 24-year-old sex worker from New Jersey who vanished in 2010 after leaving a client’s house in Oak Beach.
The news was first reported by News 12 Long Island. The case has captured national attention and confounded police on Long Island, New York, for more than a decade. It is unclear if the suspect is connected to all 11 sets of remains found in the area.
