At a news conference on Wednesday, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna announced that a deputy had punched a mother who was holding a 3-week-old infant during an arrest last year. The incident occurred on July 14, 2022 in Palmdale, northeast of Los Angeles, and was captured on body camera footage.

Sheriff Luna said he found the punching “completely unacceptable” and has sent the case to the county district attorney’s office, which will decide whether to file criminal charges against the deputy. The deputy, who has not been named, has been taken off field duty. This is the second time in a week that Sheriff Luna has decried the use of force by deputies in the Antelope Valley.

The edited video from body camera footage shows the July 2022 encounter during a traffic stop. The woman was punched twice in the face after she and other women with children were being arrested on alleged child endangerment. The FBI has also been alerted.

Sheriff Luna said he is committed to ensuring that the Antelope Valley is a safe place for everyone and that he will not tolerate the use of excessive force by his deputies. He said that he is working with the district attorney’s office to ensure that justice is served in this case.
