On Saturday afternoon, tragedy struck the town of Union, Maine when Henry Brooks, 46, of Hope, drowned while attempting to rescue his two daughters from Seven Tree Pond.
According to the Maine Warden Service, Brooks was sitting at a picnic table watching his 12- and 13-year-old daughters swim when one of them fell into deeper water where the river enters the pond. The other daughter attempted to rescue her, but also fell into the deeper water.
Brooks, hearing their cries for help, jumped into the water to rescue them. His 27-year-old son, who had grabbed a life jacket, followed him. Brooks was able to reach his daughters and bring them back to a shallow area of the pond, but he was unable to make it back himself.
The Maine Warden Service, along with the Union Fire Department, responded to the scene and recovered Brooks’ body. The two daughters were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for minor injuries.
The Maine Warden Service is currently investigating the incident. In a statement, they said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Mr. Brooks during this difficult time.”
