Key takeaways:

  • Nearly half of the U.S.’s tap water contains one or more “forever chemicals” known as PFAS.
  • PFAS have been linked to a range of health problems, including certain forms of cancer.
  • The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established a health advisory level for two types of PFAS, but has not yet set a legal limit for the chemicals in drinking water.

A new government study released Wednesday has revealed that nearly half of the United States’ tap water contains one or more “forever chemicals” known as PFAS. The U.S. Geological Survey tested tap water from 716 locations, including 269 private wells and 447 public supply sites, in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the District of Columbia.

The study is the first nationwide effort to test for PFAS in tap water from private sources in addition to regulated ones. It builds on previous scientific findings that the chemicals are widespread, showing up in consumer products as diverse as nonstick pans, food packaging and water-resistant clothing and making their way into water supplies.

More than 12,000 types of PFAS exist, and these “forever chemicals” have been linked to a range of health problems, including certain forms of cancer. The compounds are persistent in the environment and can remain for extended periods of time, making them difficult to remove from drinking water.

The study is a reminder of the importance of being aware of the water sources in your area and the potential risks associated with them. It is also a call to action for government officials to take steps to protect public health by reducing the presence of PFAS in drinking water.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established a health advisory level for two types of PFAS, but the agency has not yet set a legal limit for the chemicals in drinking water. In the meantime, it is important for individuals to take steps to protect their health, such as using a water filter or drinking bottled water.
