A couple from Florida has been arrested and charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child after their 18-month-old daughter was left in their car overnight.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a press conference Thursday that the parents, Joel and Jazmine Rondon, had attended a Fourth of July party with their three children and allegedly left the 18-month-old in the car when they got home. The child was left alone in the car from around 2 a.m. Wednesday until around 11 a.m., when the heat index was 105 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, the Rondons returned home from the party at 3:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Jazmine told Joel to bring in the 18-month old while she took the other two children inside. However, Joel failed to do so and the child was left in the car overnight.
Sheriff Judd said the incident was particularly tragic due to the extreme heat. “It is brutally hot for everyone under the best of circumstances and then this child is shut in the car, obviously with no movement of air, with it becoming hotter and hotter and hotter as the morning went on,” he said.
The Rondons have been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and are currently being held in the Polk County Jail. The investigation is ongoing.
