The tragedy occurred Thursday when the child fell into the water and the mother decided to jump in after him, according to Swedish Maritime Administration spokesperson Jonas Franzen. The child fell from a height of about 65 feet.
The victims were identified as a Polish woman born in 1985 and a Polish boy born in 2016. The next of kin have been notified.
Separately, Sweden’s Prosecution Authority said a preliminary inquiry into murder had been launched although there was “no suspect in the case”. Polish police spokesperson Mariusz Ciarka told the TVN24 broadcaster that it was impossible to save the lives of the two, both of whom were Polish citizens.
