On Thursday, Taylor Taranto, a 37-year-old man identified by online sleuths in August 2021, was arrested near former President Barack Obama’s home in Washington, D.C. Taranto had previously been identified as a participant in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.
Taranto was arrested on an open warrant for an alleged assault at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. A federal prosecutor said in court Friday that Taranto had two guns and 400 rounds of ammunition in the van he appeared to be living in, and also had a machete.
According to ABC News, a search of Taranto’s van yielded several guns and materials that could be used to create a Molotov cocktail. Taranto’s van had been parked near the D.C. jail in recent weeks and he had appeared at protests in support of other Jan. 6 defendants, videos on social media show.
Taranto currently faces four misdemeanor counts in connection with Jan. 6. Noting that he lived in the van, a federal prosecutor said Taranto had “nowhere to go.” The case is ongoing and further details are yet to be released.
