Last night, France saw a third night of nationwide protests in response to the deadly police shooting of a 17-year-old, Nahel. Protesters erected barricades, lit fires and shot fireworks at police who responded with tear gas and water cannons.

In the northwestern Paris suburb of Nanterre, where the shooting occurred, armored police vehicles rammed through the charred remains of cars that had been flipped and set ablaze. More than 600 people were arrested and at least 200 police officers injured as the government struggled to restore order.

France’s Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin called Thursday a night of “rare violence,” and the ministry said 249 police and gendarmes were injured. 875 people were arrested overnight Thursday into Friday.

In response to the unrest, French President Emmanuel Macron has called a crisis meeting of ministers to be held on Friday. The government is hoping to restore order and prevent further violence.
