According to student Yusuf Kaymak, who was in the class at the time, the suspect asked the professor if he was the professor, and when he said yes, the suspect pulled out a knife. All of the students in the class immediately ran out. Nick Manning, associate vice-president of communications for the University of Waterloo, identified the suspect as a member of “the university community” but declined to confirm the individual is a student.

Shaena Morris, a spokesperson for the Waterloo Regional Police Service, said that there is no further threat to public safety either on campus or outside in the broader community at this time.
