On Wednesday, Connecticut State Rep. Maryam Khan was attacked after attending an Eid al-Adha service with members of her family, according to police and state officials. The Hartford Police Department arrested 30-year-old Andrey Desmond, of New Britain, in connection with the incident.

Gov. Ned Lamont expressed his concern over the incident in a statement, saying, “It’s disturbing to me that this happened on a holy day meant to be marked with peaceful prayer.” He also said that he was “heart” was with Rep. Khan and that he was confident that law enforcement personnel would conduct a thorough investigation into what happened.

Khan, a Democrat serving Hartford, Windsor and South Windsor, is the first Muslim member of the Connecticut House. She has not commented on the incident.

Officers were initially called to the downtown Hartford area just after 11 a.m. ET after receiving a report of the attack. The details of the assault are still unfolding.
