Four Idaho college students were killed in an off-campus home last November, and prosecutors have now linked the accused murderer to the crime scene through a DNA sample.

According to court documents filed last week, Bryan Kohberger, 28, was linked to the crime scene through a DNA sample taken from a knife sheath found at the scene. Kohberger is a doctoral student at nearby Washington State University studying criminology.

The victims were identified as Ethan Chapin, a 20-year-old from Conway, Washington; Madison Mogen, a 21-year-old from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; Xana Kernodle, 20, from Avondale, Arizona; and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, from Rathdrum, Idaho.

The knife sheath was found on the bed next to the bodies of Madison and Kaylee. Law enforcement officials used investigative genetic genealogy to link the DNA found on the sheath to Kohberger.

Kohberger has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and is currently awaiting trial. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. The trial is set to begin in October.
