The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating a police officer who shot and wounded an 11-year-old Black boy in the child’s home after he called authorities for help.

On Tuesday, Indianola Alderman Marvin Elder said the officer, Greg Capers, was suspended without pay “effective immediately” in a 4 to 1 vote during a board meeting on Monday night.

The incident occurred on May 20 when Capers responded to a domestic call at the home of Aderrien Murry’s mother. Police had been called to the home after the father of another child of Nakala Murry, Aderrien’s mother, unexpectedly showed up at the residence.

Aderrien Murry was hospitalized for five days with a collapsed lung, lacerated liver and fractured ribs after Capers shot him in the chest.

Carlos Moore, the attorney representing the family of the boy, said Capers should be terminated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Moore said the family is still pushing to get Capers fired.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the incident. It is unclear when the investigation will be completed or what the outcome will be.
