Ted Kaczynski, the man known as the “Unabomber,” has died in his North Carolina prison cell on Saturday, according to a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson. Kaczynski was serving life without the possibility of parole for a series of bombings across the U.S. between 1978 and 1995.

Kaczynski was convicted of setting 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others in various parts of the country. He went nearly 20 years without being captured and terrorized the country each time he set off homemade explosives, often through the mail.

Kaczynski was arrested in 1996 at the primitive cabin where he was living in western Montana. On Nov. 15, 1979, an American Airlines flight flying from Chicago to Washington, D.C., filled with smoke after a bomb made by Kaczynski detonated in the luggage compartment.

Kaczynski was moved to a prison medical facility in 2021 due to poor health. His death was confirmed by multiple reports.

The Unabomber’s death marks the end of a decades-long saga of terror and destruction. His actions have left a lasting impact on the victims and their families, as well as the country as a whole.
