A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a father who was camping with his daughters at a Southern California park.
Anthony Rauda, 46, was found guilty last month of second-degree murder, attempted murder and burglary in the string of shootings at Malibu Creek State Park from November 3, 2016 to June 22, 2018.
Rauda was sentenced to 119 years to life in prison on Wednesday, according to his lawyer, Nick Ochorocha. Ochorocha said he appreciated a moving victim impact statement given Wednesday by the widow of the scientist, Tristan Beaudette, and the judge’s “class and professionalism.”
Beaudette, 35, was fatally shot in the head while camping in a tent with his two young daughters on June 18, 2018. Rauda was taken into custody in late 2018 in a ravine near the park with a rifle in his backpack.
At the sentencing, Beaudette’s widow, Erica Wu, said her husband’s death had left her and her daughters with “a life sentence of pain and suffering.” She said her daughters were “traumatized” by the shooting and that she had to explain to them why their father was never coming home.
Rauda’s lawyer said he plans to appeal the conviction.
