Rescuers are attempting to free another 200 people feared trapped in the derailed coaches, said D.B. Shinde, the Balasore district administrator in Odisha state.

Amitabh Sharma, a railroad ministry spokesperson, said some mangled pieces of the derailed train fell onto a nearby track and were hit by another passenger train coming from the opposite direction.

Nearly 500 police officers and rescue workers with 75 ambulances and buses responded to the accident, said Pradeep Jena, the top bureaucrat of the Odisha state. The New Delhi television news channel reported that 30 people were feared dead.

The cause of the accident is under investigation. The Coromandel Express, which was traveling from Howrah in West Bengal state to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu state, was the train involved in the accident.
