A man accused of attacking Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minn.) in the elevator of her Washington apartment building in February has pleaded guilty to three charges in federal court.
Kendrid Hamlin, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of assault on a member of Congress for the attack in the elevator, as well as two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, prosecutors said.
According to court documents, Craig had said hello to Hamlin, who was in the lobby of an apartment building that morning, but when she went in an elevator he followed her. Hamlin allegedly said he wanted to go to Craig’s apartment and use the restroom, and Craig refused.
Hamlin then “became aggressive” and pushed Craig against the wall of the elevator, Capitol Police said in an affidavit. Craig was able to get away and call 911.
Hamlin could get up to 11 years behind bars — up to 10 years for attacking a member of Congress and up to six months each for attacking two members of law enforcement after his attack on Craig. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for October.
Craig has been a vocal advocate for victims of domestic violence and has spoken out about her experience. In a statement, she said she was “grateful” for the guilty plea and hoped it would “bring some closure to this difficult chapter in my life.”
