Tara Reade, a former Senate aide who accused President Joe Biden of sexual assault, has moved to Moscow and is seeking to become a Russian citizen. Reade, 59, made the comments during a news conference with the Sputnik media group, a Russian press outlet, on Tuesday.

Reade said that she had arrived in Russia as a vacationer, but after a Republican lawmaker told her she was in physical danger, she decided to stay. She said that she now felt “very surrounded by protection and safety” and that, for the first time in a long time, she felt “heard and respected.”

Reade worked in Biden’s Senate office in 1993 for a short period. She said that her decision to stay in Russia was “very difficult” but that she was now asking President Vladimir Putin for Russian citizenship. Reade said that her dream was to live in both Russia and the United States, but that she was OK with the possibility of only living in Russia.

Reade’s accusations against Biden during the 2020 presidential race sparked a national debate about sexual assault and the #MeToo movement. Biden has denied the allegations and has called for the release of any records that may be related to the incident.
