Officials in Middlesex County, New Jersey, have announced the arrest of Rashid Ali Bynum, 28, of Portsmouth, Virginia, in connection with the murder of Sayreville Borough Councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour.

At a press conference Tuesday, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said Bynum has been charged with first-degree murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun, and second-degree possession of a handgun for unlawful purpose.

Dwumfour, 30, was shot multiple times in her car on February 1 in Sayreville. She had been a member of the borough council since 2018.

Police began investigating the murder shortly after it occurred and tracked Bynum to Chesapeake, Virginia, where he was arrested.

The Sayreville community is mourning the loss of Dwumfour, who was remembered by her colleagues as a passionate advocate for her constituents.

“Eunice was a bright light in our community,” said Sayreville Mayor Kennedy O’Brien. “She was a tireless advocate for the people of Sayreville and a passionate voice for justice and equality. We are deeply saddened by her loss and our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.”
