Residents of Kyiv, Ukraine were startled on Monday morning when air raid sirens sounded and explosions rocked the city. The attack was part of an intensifying Russian assault on the Ukrainian capital.
The Kyiv military administration reported that debris from intercepted missiles fell in Kyiv’s central and northern districts during the morning, landing in the middle of traffic on a city road and also starting a fire on a building’s roof.
Ukraine’s chief of staff, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, reported that Russian forces fired 11 ballistic and cruise missiles at Kyiv at about 11:30 a.m. local time (4:30 a.m. ET), shortly after an air alert sounded through the capital. NBC News staff in the city heard a series of loud blasts that hit one after another, making window glass rattle in buildings in the center of the capital.
Fortunately, all of the missiles were shot down, according to Zaluzhnyi. Puffs of white smoke could be seen in the blue sky over the city from street level.
The attack on Kyiv is the latest in a series of escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The Ukrainian government has accused Russia of sending troops and weapons into the country to support separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. Russia has denied the accusations.
