A California man who won the record-breaking $2 billion Powerball lottery jackpot last year is being sued by another man who claims the ticket was stolen from him.
Jose Rivera, a resident of California, filed a civil complaint in Alhambra Superior Court in February, accusing the winner, Manuel Castro, of stealing the winning ticket from him. The suit also names The California State Lottery Commission, the state of California and a man named Urachi F. as defendants.
Castro, who chose to accept the jackpot in a lump-sum payment of $997.6 million, said at the time he was “shocked and ecstatic”. His attorney David De Paoli did not immediately respond to a request for comment confirming that his client had been sued.
Brian Kramer and Estela Richeda, the lawyers representing Rivera, also did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday.
The case is expected to be heard in court in the coming weeks. It is unclear what the outcome of the case will be, but it is sure to be closely watched by lottery players across the country.
