An 11-year-old Mississippi boy is in recovery after being shot by a police officer responding to a domestic call at his home.

Aderrien Murry was seriously wounded early Saturday by an Indianola police officer responding to a domestic call at the home of the 11-year-old’s mother, said Carlos Moore, an attorney for the boy’s family.

The boy’s mother, Nakala Murry, said she had requested police presence after the father of her younger daughter showed up “irate” early Saturday. She said the officer came to the front door with his firearm already drawn and ordered everyone outside.

At a press conference Monday, Nakala Murry recalled her son’s reaction to the gunshot. “He’s blessed to have survived but he’s still in pain emotionally and mentally,” she said.

The shooting has sparked calls for the officer to be fired and charged, with a group of protesters gathering at Indianola City Hall on Thursday to demand accountability. Moore said the family is seeking justice and that “this should not have happened.”
