A South Carolina mother is facing murder and attempted murder charges after allegedly killing one of her daughters and attempting to kill another.
Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner announced on Friday that Jamie Bradley Brun, 37, was arrested in connection with the death of her 6-year-old daughter, Mackaya, and the attempted killing of her 8-year-old daughter.
According to Tanner, the 16-year-old daughter of Brun was asleep in the home on St. Helena Island when her 8-year-old sister’s screams woke her up around 1:30 a.m. on Friday. The older daughter was able to save her sister from an attempted drowning.
The sheriff’s office said Mackaya had likely drowned. Brun has spoken to investigators, but Tanner declined to comment on why Brun wanted to kill her children.
“It’s not my job to determine if someone has a mental health problem,” Tanner said.
Brun is currently being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center. Her 8-year-old daughter is being treated for her injuries. The identities of the children have not been released.
