Ron DeSantis Signs Six-Week Abortion Ban Into Law, But His Poll Numbers Are Declining

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a landmark six-week abortion ban into law, but he was hesitant to spend much time touting the passage of the bill. DeSantis is running to the right of President Donald Trump, pushing “some of the most draconian” restrictions on abortion rights as well as attacks on the LGBTQ+ community and teachers in the name of his “anti-woke” agenda.

Despite polls showing DeSantis as having the best chance to defeat Donald Trump in the GOP race, his poll numbers have been steadily declining. Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson predicted that DeSantis’ attempt to win the Republican presidential nomination could be short-lived.

When DeSantis signed the 15-week ban into law last year, he made a big show of it, televising the bill’s signing and bringing in a crowd of Republican state lawmakers, children holding pro-life signs, and a packed audience to applaud his signature. However, when he signed his six-week ban into law in April, he did it privately.

The six-week abortion ban is one of the strictest in the nation, and it has been met with criticism from pro-choice advocates. The law is set to take effect in July 2021, but it is expected to be challenged in court. It remains to be seen how DeSantis’ “anti-woke” agenda will affect his presidential ambitions.
