Portuguese police, aided by German and British officers, resumed their search for Madeleine McCann on Tuesday, 16 years after the British child disappeared in Portugal’s southern Algarve region.

Officers with rakes and hoe-like tools spread out in a line and began poking and raking the soil close to the Arade dam, located about 30 miles from Praia da Luz, where the 3-year-old girl was last seen alive in 2007.

More than a dozen cars and police vans arrived in the area, and a blue base tent was set up and cordoned off to the media and public. About 20 to 30 officers, some in uniform, were seen in the area by the Arade dam.

Witnesses said police began searching shortly before 8 a.m. Tuesday in an area some miles away from the tent. A search dingy was also seen navigating in the Arade dam.

The search for Madeleine McCann is ongoing, and police are hopeful that the renewed effort will bring them closer to finding the missing child.
