NBC Sports California has announced the termination of Glen Kuiper, the primary play-by-play broadcaster for the Oakland Athletics, following an internal review. The review was triggered when Kuiper used a racial slur on air during a pre-game broadcast at an away game in Missouri on May 6.

In a statement to CBS News, NBC Sports California said, “Following an internal review, the decision has been made for NBC Sports California to end its relationship with Glen Kuiper, effective immediately.”

Kuiper had been with the Oakland A’s since 1995 and was the longest-tenured broadcaster in the team’s history. He was also the play-by-play announcer for the San Francisco Giants from 1997 to 2000.

The incident occurred when Kuiper was introducing a segment about the Negro League Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. Instead of saying the name of the museum, he said, “We had a phenomenal day today. And Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue.”

The network’s statement concluded, “We thank Glen for his dedication to Bay Area baseball over the years.”

Kuiper had not commented publicly on the incident or his termination as of Monday. It is unclear who will replace him as the primary play-by-play broadcaster for the Oakland A’s.
