A Utah mother has been accused of killing her husband and then writing a children’s book about grief after his death. According to charging documents obtained by The Associated Press, Kouri Richins, 33, is accused of poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, 39, with a lethal dose of fentanyl in a Moscow mule cocktail in March 2022.

Prosecutors allege that Richins had taken out four life insurance policies on her husband without his knowledge from 2015 to 2017, with benefits totaling nearly $2 million. Richins is now charged with aggravated murder and three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

An autopsy and toxicology report revealed that Eric Richins had died from an overdose of fentanyl. Richins reportedly told investigators that she had found her husband unresponsive in the middle of the night.

Richins is currently being held in the Salt Lake County Jail without bail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for June 2022. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
