Salman Rushdie Awarded Freedom to Publish Award at British Book Awards, Urges Authors to Stand Up for Their Rights

Salman Rushdie, the acclaimed author of Midnight’s Children, has been awarded the Freedom to Publish Award at the British Book Awards. Rushdie, who appeared via video message, said that freedom of expression and freedom to publish has not been under such threat in the West in his lifetime.

Organizers of the British Book Awards said that the award acknowledges the determination of authors, publishers and booksellers who take a stand against intolerance, despite the ongoing threats they face.

Rushdie was attacked onstage nine months ago and was seriously injured. He has since been a vocal advocate for freedom of expression and has spoken out against censorship and intolerance.
