On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the Vatican for a private audience with Pope Francis. During the 40-minute meeting, Zelenskyy sought the pontiff’s support for Ukraine’s peace plan to end the full-scale war launched by Russia a year ago.
In a tweet after the meeting, Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Francis for “his personal attention to the tragedy of millions of Ukrainians.” He also announced his arrival in the Italian capital on Twitter, saying it was “an important visit for the approaching victory of Ukraine!”
Upon his arrival, Zelenskyy was greeted by the pope, who used a cane for his knee problem. He said it was a “great honor” to meet with the pontiff. Italian state radio reported that a no-fly zone had been ordered across Rome’s skies ahead of the meeting, with police sharpshooters stationed on high buildings for Zelenskyy’s security.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy spoke with the pontiff “about the tens of thousands of deported (Ukrainian) children.” After the meeting, Zelenskyy also held meetings with Italian officials.
The visit marks Zelenskyy’s first trip to Italy since the beginning of the Russian invasion. It is unclear at this time what the outcome of the meetings will be, but it is clear that Zelenskyy is seeking the support of Pope Francis and Italian officials in his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
