A YouTuber pilot has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation, the U.S. attorney’s office for Central California said in a news release.
Trevor Daniel Jacob, 29, admitted to deliberately crashing his single-engine airplane in a California national forest in order to boost views for a sponsorship deal. In his plea agreement, Jacob agreed to promote a wallet in a YouTube video as part of the sponsorship deal.
The video, titled “I Crashed My Airplane,” was posted on December 23, 2021 and shows Jacob, an experienced pilot and skydiver, taking off. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff.
Jacob misled investigators about the location of the wreck and was charged with destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
Jacob is scheduled to be sentenced on August 17, 2021. He faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
