U.S. Marshals have captured one of two inmates who escaped from a Philadelphia prison early this week. The fugitive, 24-year-old Nasir Grant, was taken into custody Thursday night while dressed as a woman.
Members of a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force were conducting surveillance in an area of North Philadelphia where they believed Grant was staying. Shortly before 10:30 p.m., a man resembling Grant “came out of a residence wearing full female Muslim garb and a head covering,” according to Robert Clark, a supervisory deputy with the Marshals Service Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
Grant was jailed on charges of criminal conspiracy, firearms violations and drug charges. He and another inmate, 18-year-old Ameen Hurst, escaped through a hole in a wall in their cell. The pair had been housed in the same unit but different cells.
The location of Hurst remains unknown. The Philadelphia Police Department is asking anyone with information on Hurst’s whereabouts to contact them.
The escape of the two inmates went unnoticed for nearly 19 hours. The Philadelphia Department of Prisons has launched an investigation into how the escape went unnoticed for so long.
