Actor Michael J. Fox has opened up about his battle with Parkinson’s disease, which he was diagnosed with in 1991 at age 29. In an interview with Variety published Thursday, Fox detailed the physical injuries he has suffered as a result of the neurological disorder, which causes unintended stiffness, shakiness and difficulty with coordination.

“I broke this shoulder — had it replaced,” Fox said. “I broke this elbow. I broke this humerus. I broke this hand. I broke my face.”

The 61-year-old “Back to the Future” star said it has been difficult to manage his illness over the years, but he still enjoys life. “I just enjoy the little math problems of existence,” he said. “I’m still happy to join the day and be a part of things.”

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive disorder that worsens over time, according to the National Institutes of Health. Symptoms can include tremors, slowed movement, and difficulty with balance and coordination.

Fox kept his diagnosis a secret for many years, but has since become an advocate for Parkinson’s research and awareness. He established the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, which has raised over $800 million to date.
