PBGV Buddy Holly Crowned Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show crowned a new champion on Tuesday night, with a Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen named Buddy Holly taking home the prestigious Best in Show award. The win marks the first time a PBGV has won the award, and is a major accomplishment for the 154th most prevalent purebred in the United States.

Buddy Holly, who was co-owned and handled by Janice Hayes, beat out six other finalists to take home the top prize. Among the competitors was Rummie, a Pekingese that aimed to bring home the third trophy in 11 years for his small-but-regal breed.

“I never thought a PBGV would do this,” Hayes said. “Buddy Holly is the epitome of a show dog.”

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a breed of small scent hound that was originally bred for hunting rabbits in the Vendée region of France. The breed is known for its alertness, intelligence, and friendly disposition.

The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the oldest and most prestigious dog show in the United States. It has been held annually since 1877, and is one of the most highly anticipated events in the canine world.
