Steven Spainhouer, who was one of the first to respond to the shooting, recalled trying to save some of the victims, including a child he found beneath his dead mother. Spainhouer was alerted to the shooting by his son, who was working in the mall’s H&M store and heard gunfire.
“When I heard those shots, and then when the multiple shots happened, my heart just immediately just dropped,” said Spainhouer’s son.
Spainhouer described the experience as “unimaginable”, saying he never expected to be in the position of being the first first responder on the scene.
The gunman was also killed in the shooting. The motive for the shooting is still under investigation. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
