A massive manhunt is underway in Cleveland, Texas, for a suspect accused of killing five people in a mass shooting on Friday.
Wilson Garcia, a survivor of the shooting, spoke to reporters at a vigil on Sunday about the incident and his wife’s courage. Garcia said that his wife had told him to go inside because “he won’t fire at me, I’m a woman.”
Garcia said that the suspect, Francisco Oropesa, had been shooting his gun in his yard on Friday. Garcia had gone over to Oropesa to “respectfully” ask him to move farther away from their home, but Oropesa had loaded his weapon.
Authorities said Sunday afternoon that Oropesa had managed to slip past a 2-mile dragnet of more than 150 law enforcement officers on Saturday. On Sunday, they said, more than 250 officers were continuing the search.
The shooting has left the community of Cleveland, Texas, in shock. Residents are hoping for a swift resolution to the manhunt and justice for the victims of the shooting.
