A Little Rock resident has pleaded not guilty to twelve counts of fraud and stolen property charges. Candace Chapman Scott, 36, was indicted on April 5th in federal court for selling 20 boxes of stolen body parts from medical school cadavers to a Pennsylvania man for nearly $11,000.

Scott, a former mortuary worker, allegedly set up the transactions with a man she met through a Facebook group about “oddities.” The twelve counts include conspiracy to commit mail fraud, mail fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, and interstate transportation of stolen property.

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) released a statement regarding the incident. UAMS spokesperson Leslie Taylor said, “We are deeply disturbed by the allegations in the indictment. UAMS has a long-standing commitment to the highest ethical standards in the use of cadavers for medical education and research. We are taking this matter very seriously and are conducting an internal investigation.”

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Arkansas is prosecuting the case. Scott’s trial is set to begin on June 7th. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
